Now in its sixth year, Ice Cube Gallery’s annual Icebreaker show has become a tradition, albeit a functional one: Not only is the national juried exhibition an important fundraiser for the co-op, but it also affords gallery members a good look at potential additions to their ranks. “We try to put on an exhibition of works that really displays the breadth of what’s happening in the contemporary art world,” says gallery director Sarah Rockett, who notes that it’s been a banner year for entries. “Last year we had about 600 entries; this year there were more than 1,000.” It’s a good thing that the Ice Cube crew brought on 2015 Biennial of the Americas curator Lauren Wright, a talented art maven with local roots, to whittle the show down to sixty works by 43 artists.

“It’s going to be a fun show,” Rockett promises. “Lauren has a great sense of humor. As she was going through all the printed images, she was constantly picking them up and laughing to herself. So many curators are so serious about how they want to arrange a show, but I think her sense of humor runs through the chosen works.”

See Icebreaker 6 at an opening reception tonight from 6 to 9 p.m. at Ice Cube Gallery, 3320 Walnut Street; the exhibit runs through January 31. Lauren Wright will also present a gallery talk at 2 p.m. on January 17; go to icecubegallery.com for details.

Thursdays-Saturdays; Fri., Jan. 9, 6-9 p.m. Starts: Jan. 8. Continues through Jan. 31, 2015
