Getting a dance show off the ground in this economy can be a real circus, a delicate dance requiring high-flying financial acrobatics. Nancy Smith, the founder and artistic director of Frequent Flyers Productions, a Boulder-based aerial dance troupe, is uniquely qualified for the job. Last month Smith turned to Kickstarter.com with a modest ask of $1,500 to help cover the cost of commissioning original music and performance by Jesse Manno for Frequent Flyers’ production of Cirque de Minuet, and ended up surpassing her goal in the first 24 hours.
For a company where dangling precariously from a thread is the name of the game, the spare change will be a small boon, says Smith: She’s using the extra money from her Kickstarter campaign, which ends tomorrow, to help cover rehearsal pay for her aerial dance performers.
Cirque de Minuet pitches its tent tonight at 7:45 p.m. at The Dairy Center for The Performing Arts, 2590 Walnut Street in Boulder, with another show Saturday night and a matinee on Sunday at 3:45 p.m., then another round of shows next weekend. Tickets start at $20.
“The piece is inspired by Erin Morgenstern’s The Night Circus,” Smith says. “It’s not a representation of the book, but I was inspired by it.”
