Fans of the annual Denver Gorilla Run might notice that the event has migrated this year from its longtime home in lower downtown to City Park. “Runners will see a lot more natural vegetation,” notes Frank Keesling, president of the Mountain Gorilla Conservation Fund, the beneficiary of the event. “It’s a more gorilla-friendly atmosphere than the cement jungle of downtown Denver.”

Ongoing projects downtown might have made permitting difficult, so instead, participants will get to enjoy the relatively wide-open space of City Park, he explains. “You can go around the course any way you like that’s non-motorized. We allow bicycles, skateboards and rollerblades, and you can walk or run — or not go around the course at all. People who are wanting to do their first 5K and have a real fun, twisted element to it, this is the race for them.”

That twisted element, of course, is the gorilla suit, which is included in the price of race admission for first-time gorilla runners ($99.95). Returning runners pay $40, and there are also options for “little gorillas” — racers twelve and under. Swing through the trees beginning at 11 a.m. today; admission includes an after-party with food and beer. Visit denvergorillarun.com for information.
