Denver may never host a Super Bowl, but we’ve got the next best thing: the Donkey Kong world championships! Fully sanctioned by Twin Galaxies, video gaming’s high-score keeper of record, the Kong Off 3 will host 22 of the world’s best Donkey Kongers, including The King of Kong’s Billy Mitchell and Steve Wiebe, current champion Jeff Willms and more.
And it’s not just all Donkey Kong, all the time, either. Joining the infamous angry ape will be fourteen other classic arcade games, from Frogger to Tron. With so many of the world’s top gamers in attendance, there’s a good chance that a new record or two will be set, offering arcade enthusiasts the opportunity to say they were there. “We had three world records set here last year in addition to the Donkey Kong competition and the highest-recorded Donkey Kong score of all time,” says Jourdan Adler, owner of the 1UP and Twin Galaxies. “It’s crazy to see this all happening in Denver.”
The event kicks off today at noon with an attempt at a 24-hour Tron marathon; the Kong competition begins Friday at 11 a.m. and continues through Sunday night. All activities will be at the 1UP, 1925 Blake Street, and admission is free, but space is limited. For more information, visit thekongoff.com.

Will you step up to support Westword this year?
At Westword, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $23,000 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $50,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of Westword, now’s the time to give back.
