The Denver Zine Library has come a long way since it began in a shed on Archer Street in 2003. Making its way through six different spaces and tons of readings and events, the library has accumulated a collection of over 15,000 zines, which are available to the public for free checkout. “A lot of these types of projects come and go, and we’ve definitely had our ebbs and flows, but it’s amazing to look back ten years later and say this is something that we started in 2003,” says co-founder Kelly Shortandqueer. “Having access to zines provides access to voices that aren’t necessarily heard in the mainstream.”
The DZL is on the lookout for a new space again, but it will celebrate a decade of homemade publications tonight with a bash that includes tunes from Bearsnail and Boot and Rally, zine readings galore and sharing of memories, which include being featured on NPR’s summer reading series and winning one of the very first Westword MasterMind Awards.
The event, 10 Years Later…The DZL’s Anniversary Party, takes place tonight at 7 p.m. at the Denver Zine Library, 2727 West 27th Avenue. A $10 donation is requested at the door, and sheets of paper will be on hand for attendees to contribute to a commemorative zine.
