When the clock strikes midnight in Colorado tonight, history will be made: For the first time, all committed couples will be able to apply for civil-union licenses. In celebration of this equitable landmark, One Colorado will be throwing a Civil Soirée to prepare for the historic moment.
“We’re really excited to see the bill be implemented, and we want to make sure that everyone who’s eligible and wants to get a civil union has access to those protections and responsibilities,” says One Colorado’s Preston Dickey. The evening begins with a seated dinner at 7 p.m. that’s sold out — but there are still $35 tickets left for the 9 p.m. dessert reception, which is when the party really starts. There will be a couples’ dance for twosomes celebrating a civil union, along with a cake-cutting ceremony, a photo booth and a silent auction.
In addition to honoring an important piece of legislation, the Civil Soirée will also serve as a fundraiser for the One Colorado Education Fund, which focuses on public-education projects supporting LGBT equality. All events are at the McNichols Building, 144 West Colfax Avenue in Civic Center Park; for more information, visit civilsoiree.org.

Will you step up to support Westword this year?
At Westword, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $23,000 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $50,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of Westword, now’s the time to give back.
