When viewers walk into the Black Book Gallery this month, they’ll enter a space where all of the lights have been shut off except for the stark, backlit, magical imagery of husband-and-wife duo Hari Panicker and Deepti Nair. “Our paper-cut lightbox art pieces are intricate hand-cut paper sculptures and dioramas that are all about storytelling,” Panicker says of the exhibit, Oh, the Places You’ll Go. “We want the viewers to be attracted like a moth to a flame to our art, with no distractions.”
Their work — based on a summer of travel across the United States — evokes the style of a Javanese Wayang shadow-puppet show. The cutouts depict natural frames, like trees and rock formations, that offer viewers a refreshing look at the environment of the western U.S. “We are lucky to be in Colorado, amid all the wilderness and amazing places you can travel. The show is our take on all the experiences of travel and all the inspirations that we have had in our long journey from India to Denver to making it in the art scene,” Panicker explains.
Places opens tonight at the Black Book Gallery, 555 Santa Fe Drive, with a free reception from 6 to 10 p.m.; it continues through September. For more information, go to facebook.com/harianddeepti.
