Lucky Lady

Few burlesque acts involve the spoken word, and as far as we know, Lucky DeLuxe (aka Susanna Lee) is the only spoken-word comedic burlesque artist in the business. “I’ve been a standup comic for sixteen years,” Lee says. “I always loved what I was doing, but it always felt just a little bit like I wasn’t doing it the way other people were doing it. I was striving to be really personal and honest, but I wasn’t living a wholesome life, so I wasn’t up there talking about a lot of things that mainstream audiences relate to, and it was frustrating. I was working, I was touring — on paper, everything was working out — but it just never felt like the perfect fit.”

So on a lark, she took a burlesque class. “And it just kind of occurred to me that burlesque was a much better fit for what I do. Standup is an art form, but there are still so many rules, and working in the burlesque world allowed me to really do what I wanted, because there were fewer boundaries.”

Now, she’s finally found her fit. “Out of sixteen years of professional performance, Getting Lucky is the thing I’m the most proud of. It’s so refreshing for me to be making my living off something that keeps me absolutely interested and enthralled, something I’ve never gotten bored with,” she says.
