Audio-visual performance covers a lot of territory, according to David Fodel, who’s co-curating the inaugural MediaLive 2012 this week-end. “It goes anywhere from people who are doing light shows at a rave to super-high-end academic conservatory music that’s really abstract and difficult to penetrate,” he explains.

MediaLive, a three-day symposium filled with performances, workshops and talks emphasizing audio-visual media, will “showcase a wide variety of approaches with people who are coming at this thing from various angles but definitely trying to keep it focused in more of a fine-arts kind of angle,” Fodel says. “Otherwise, it would be too broad.

“There hasn’t been a venue where this stuff has come together in a format that really shows this nice cross-section of what artists are doing in this realm,” Fodel continues. MediaLive aims to change that: Guitarist Janet Feder will team up with Andrew Pask and Darwin Grosse, who both work for Cycling ’74, a software company that makes tools for these sorts of performances; and NoiseFold, an inter-active media group founded by David Stout and Cory Metcalf that creates sound generated through geometric shapes made on a computer, will be working with forward-thinking cellist Frances-Marie Uitti.

MediaLive 2012 starts at 5 p.m. tonight and runs through Sunday at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, 1750 13th Street in Boulder, in conjunction with the exhibit Visual Rhythms. Daily passes are $15; three-day passes are $40, or $35 for students. For more information, go to www.bmoca.org or call 303-443-2122.
