When I was twelve, Escape From New York was the coolest movie ever. Snake Plissken was my hero, my idol. He was tough, tattooed, fearless and had an awesome action mullet. He got shot in the leg and, hours later, managed to kill a dude three times his size in hand-to-hand combat. What’s not to love?

Upon reflection, plenty. The premise is ridiculous, the plot is stupid, and really, Snake’s kind of a dick. But I still love it, even as I snicker through every viewing.

Mile High Sci-Fi takes my love/ridicule relationship with the film to a whole new level, cutting it to shreds with snarky commentary in the finest Mystery Science Theater 3000 tradition. Check it out today or tomorrow at 8:30 p.m. at Starz FilmCenter in the Tivoli. Admission is $8.75, and there’s a full bar, plus a beer cart making rounds throughout the night.
