Katie Taft’s work is all about plaster and papier-mâché, creatures and cameras: First she creates her creatures, quite solid “Imaginary Friends,” then reinterprets them in more amorphous photographs. To date, the figures have been small, like toys, but for Friendzilla — a new exhibit at PlatteForum Gallery of work by Taft and students from Mapleton Expeditionary School of the Arts and Adams County Connections — she decided to supersize them, creating human-sized animal forms inspired by the likes of Godzilla and Mothra. Intimidating? Well, yes and no. But after the PlatteForum show, Taft is considering ‘zilla-sizing them photographically; the print’s the limit. And the student work? A cornucopia of figures ranging from Taft-like forms to three-dimensional family portraits.
