Although Adam Lerner took the reins of MCA Denver last March, most of the exhibits on display since then were booked by his predecessor, Cydney Payton. That changed when Lerner rolled out six shows collectively titled Looking for the Face I Had Before the World Was Made.
“I’m excited to organize the entire museum around a single theme,” says Lerner. “There is a real otherworldly sensibility to these works. The artists share an interest in going beyond everyday experience to tap into something more essential about human beings, something more important than surface appearance.”
Included are Michaël Borremans, Eric and Heather ChanSchatz, Lorraine O’Grady, A. G. Rizzoli and Denver’s own William Stockman. In addition, there’s a film by Neil Jordan based on a monologue by author Samuel Beckett.
“I love the diversity, from an outsider artist who worked in the 1930s to a pair of young New York artists,” Lerner notes.
