As the fight for marriage equality continues to amass victories, the formerly niche market of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender cinema has moved into the mainstream. LGBT identity is “becoming the new normal and reaching a broader audience,” says Matthew Campbell, programmer at the Sie FilmCenter, “but it still needs to be championed in and of itself.” And that’s what the Sie’s programming team continues to do through Cinema Q, an annual festival featuring the best of LGBT narrative and documentary film.
“Part of the Denver Film Society’s mission is to bridge different audiences and bring them together. Cinema Q is striving to bring together the LGBT community and people who may not necessarily identify as a part of that community through storytelling,” Campbell says.
This year’s festival offerings include Queens and Cowboys: A Straight Year on the Gay Rodeo and Mala Mala, about transgender communities in Puerto Rico, as well as LGBT-produced web series and shorts. The festival kicks off tonight at 7 p.m. with Appropriate Behavior (tickets are $15 for members, $20 for non-members) and will close on Sunday with a screening of Limited Partnership, about the country’s first same-sex marriage, with filmmaker Thomas Miller and Cleta Rorex, the former Boulder County clerk who issued that license in the ’70s, in attendance ($13 members, $15 non-members).
