For boutique entrepreneur Stephanie Shearer, community played a big part in her decision to take a chance on renovating the EZE Mop Complex at 17th Avenue and Lafayette Street into a row of shops. She moved her Soul Haus men’s boutique and opened the new Peppermint gift shop there and, for the last few months, Shearer’s been hosting monthly Moonlight Madness ’til Midnight late-night shopping evenings that have included sales, DJs and other perks.

For February, she’s upped the bar with a trunk show featuring the enormously popular steampunk jewelry designs of Melissa Tomerlin, who peddles her amazingly well-priced techno trinkets, golden wasps and gear-laden lockets under the brand name of Gold Bug. “She knows what people want to pay and doesn’t overvalue her product,” Shearer says of the uber-local artist, who lives three blocks from the store and makes great potential loot for someone’s Valentine.

Shop, chat and sample Valentine-inspired refreshments from 6 p.m. to midnight along the 1200 block of East 17th Avenue; to sweeten the deals even further, Shearer is donating 20 percent of the evening’s sales to the Bresma Orphanage in Haiti. Visit www.soulhaus.com or call 303-861-4375.
