The iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre inspires wonder in visitors and performers alike, but with its open skies and arena seating, it doesn’t seem like an obvious choice for a comedy venue. Comedy, like most fungi, tends to grow in darkened basements, but the 2014 programming calendar at Red Rocks has demonstrated the venue’s versatility. After an entire summer filled with dick jokes reverberating off the majestic sandstone cliffs, the place is gearing up for its funniest gig yet, as host of the second annual Oddball Comedy Festival.
Presented by Funny or Die and part of a 21-show tour, the Oddball Comedy Festival is staking its claim as the nation’s best comedy tour by curating an unbeatable lineup and focusing on unconventional outdoor venues. “With the Oddball Festival 2014, we are thrilled to expand upon last year’s successful tour by offering fans the greatest cast of comedians ever assembled for an epic night of enter-tainment under the stars,” says president of Live Nation Comedy, Geof Wills.
The 2014 Oddball lineup boasts comic luminaries such as Aziz Ansari, Louis C.K., Sarah Silverman, Hannibal Buress, Marc Maron, Whitney Cummings, Demetri Martin and Chris Hardwick. The entire evening will be soundtracked to the beats of DJ Trauma (who just completed a tour with last year’s Oddball headliner, Dave Chappelle). A concurrent show will take place on a second stage, hosted by alt-comedy darling Brody Stevens.
Doors open at 5 p.m. tonight; tickets, $99, are available at livenation.com. Red Rocks is at 18300 West Alameda Parkway in Morrison.
