The Doors story is well known to rock fans, but it’s never been adequately captured on film until now. In When You’re Strange: A Film About the Doors, director Tom DiCillo has finally created a definitive document of the band, from its early days right up to the end. “He spent years trying to compile enough footage that he felt that there was a film,” explains Kirk Peterson, talent buyer for the Boulder Theater. “Anything moving forward is going to be a regurgitation of some of the things he unearthed for the first time.”
DiCillo has discovered amazing, never-before-seen film, from material shot by Jim Morrison’s fellow film students at UCLA to incredible, pristine 35mm footage that looks almost too good to be true. He pairs the imagery with the music of the Doors and narration by Johnny Depp to create a revealing and riveting history of one of the most important bands in pop-music history.
See it at 8 p.m. tonight only at the Boulder Theater, 2032 14th Street in Boulder. For more information and to purchase tickets, $10, visit www.bouldertheater.com or call 303-786-7030.

Will you step up to support Westword this year?
At Westword, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $22,750 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $50,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of Westword, now’s the time to give back.
