It’s getting to the point where even Patrick Mueller, the artistic director of Denver’s adventurous boundary-breaking Control Group Productions dance company, is at a loss for words trying to explain his latest venture. But that’s what working on the edge is all about, and perma|COUTURE, episode 1, another entry in Control Group’s ongoing Salon Romantique series, might turn out to be as much of a surprise for Mueller as it will be for the audience. So far, it’s shaping up to be more of a lecture/demonstration, he adds, applying the tenets of permaculture to those of live performance practice and seeing what the process cultivates.
“The honest truth is that this work is more unknown than anything we’ve presented before,” Mueller notes. “It’s part of the conceptual structure of the project that each work takes a different format. The first one was a stage production, then we had a party, and then a bus tour. This is more of a series of smaller items and less of a finished project – more like a collection of short stories or mutating mini-events, designed to be more intimate.”
