Scholars of the Mesoamerican Long Count Calendar — and modern-day explorers sipping on ayahuasca — are torn over the implications of the date December 21, 2012, the end of a long count “b’ak’tun” in the Mayan calendar. The world is, of course, going to hell in a handbasket (isn’t it always?), but it’s unclear whether we’re on the precipice of an apocalypse, a new creation, or both. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, according to author Daniel Pinchbeck.
“We are in a time of tremendous transformation, and with that comes tremendous opportunity,” says Pinchbeck. “Although most people tend to see this as a dark moment of crisis, I see it as an opportunity to move to a higher state of awareness and an evolved state of human behavior on the planet. I see a lot of people waking up and becoming more conscious of their behavior on a lot of levels. It’s about stepping up and taking responsibility at a time when we’re on the edge.”
Pinchbeck’s latest book, Notes From the Edge Times, is a followup to his bestseller 2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl and coincides with the release of his film, 2012: Time for Change.
