Tired of those overhyped “family” Christmas shows? The Avenue Theater’s Santa’s Big Red Sack is an opportunity for you to enjoy some adult holiday fun, and for Santa to stop taking himself so seriously. “We like to call it the ‘Holiday Show You Shouldn’t Take Your Kids To,’” says theater founder Bob Wells. “It’s a show written by the Rattlebrain Theatre Company as an alternative to the traditional holiday entertainment, like Christmas Carols and Nutcrackers. This is a different kind of nutcracker. “
The show, which opens tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Avenue Theater, 417 East 17th Avenue, is an irreverent look at the Christmas traditions we hold nearest and dearest. In a collection of skits and songs updated with current events, Big Red Sack skewers everything from the three wise men to holiday carols, from the NRA to the Country Buffet. “We’re equal-opportunity offenders,” explains Rattlebrain’s Jane Shirley. “It’s definitely not the ‘Take the kids and let’s see a Christmas show.’ It’s for the grownups.”
Tickets are $20, $17 for students, seniors and groups of ten or more. For more information, call 303-321-5925 or go to www.avenuetheater.com.
Fridays, Saturdays, 7:30 p.m. Starts: Nov. 27. Continues through Dec. 18, 2009
