Aspen is not all skiing and shopping and partying and beautiful people. Thanks to the Aspen Writers’ Foundation, the brain gets some exercise, too, with Winter Words — a series of talks billed as “Après Ski for the Mind.” When the AWF started the program ten years ago, it already had a twenty-year track record of helping writers; Winter Words was designed to bring those writers and readers together. Since its inception a decade ago, it has presented 45 authors in public talks. “Winter Words fits snugly in Aspen’s arts and culture landscape simply by nourishing and growing the imaginations of our community, offering an escape into literature and giving local book lovers the chance to mingle with some of the biggest names in storytelling,” says executive director Lisa Consiglio. “This year’s lineup has something for everyone.”
The event gets off to a powerful start at 5:30 p.m. today with a talk and signing by Yusef Komunyakaa — a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet who will share his experience as both a black man of the American South and a Vietnam veteran — in the upstairs Mountain Room at the Sky Hotel. Tickets to the talk are $15 ($10 students and educators); it will be followed by an exclusive author’s salon (that’s a bit pricier, of course, but this is Aspen).
