Anthony Guilbert is unhappy with the current state of poetic activism.
“The image of the writer is not one that people really think of in the context of social issues,” Guilbert says. “They write things about these issues, but they don’t really go out and do anything. So I decided to do something.”
What the visiting professor of English at Metropolitan State College of Denver has done is organize Words for Delores, a performance of Front Range academic and street poets — including Denver poet laureate Chris Ransick, Denver Slam Team coach Ted Vaca and ten others — to benefit the Delores Project shelter for homeless women.
“I’d like for this to become an impetus for people to do projects for whatever social issues they feel need to be addressed from a poetic perspective,” Guilbert adds.
