Don’t be frightened by the name of this lecture series: Notes on How Not to Use “Postmodernism” in a Sentence. Betsy Ermarth promises it will not be another series of talks aimed at the academic elite — despite the fact that the speaker, author and professor is a former chair at the University of Edinburgh.
“This is to bring to a public audience issues that are of considerable public importance,” Ermarth explains. “I’m thinking about the cultural paradigm shift that we’re probably in the middle of, and it could be as big as the Renaissance. Something really major is going on.”
Tonight’s talk, “A Brief History of Space and Time in Western Culture,” is the first in the series and takes place in the Lab at Belmar, 404 South Upham Street in Lakewood. Each month through May, Ermarth will build on this foundation, tackling writing, philosophy, politics and art; because the lectures can stand on their own, you don’t need to attend them all to get the picture.
