The beet takes center stage in Mead.
The town of Mead, around 35 miles north of Denver, is steeped in sugar-beet history. It was founded more than a hundred years ago, when a railroad line was built through the area to transport beets to the refinery in Longmont. It’s fitting, then, that Mead will host today’s second annual Sugar Beet Festival. Aside from beet tastings, the celebration includes all the “down-home country fun” one might expect, according to planner Valerie Thompson. Festival-goers can partake in a hay-bale-throwing contest, a skillet toss, a pedal tractor-pull race, pumpkin- and face-painting and a tour of antique farm equipment. To get to the party from I-25, take the Highway 66 exit (243) and go east one mile to County Road 13, then follow 13 north to County Road 32. The festival, which will be on the right, goes from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; tickets are $5 for adults, $1 for kids and seniors. Children under five get in free. For details, contact Thompson at 303-709-8381.
