Four Mile Historic Park goes all out in Civil War style today for the Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Festival, a celebration of independence and Western American tradition. A real-life Abe Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson and Uncle Sam will join the site’s usual cadre of costumed settlers for a day of wagon rides, hide tanning, cannon firings and even a reading of the Declaration of Independence. Standing out from the park’s usual frontier gatherings, “it’s a day where we can come together as a community and celebrate our heritage,” says park development director MacKenzie Pacifico.
Panning for gold and woodworking workshops are part of the day’s kid-friendly activities, along with live music of the period, Civil War reenactments and mountain man storytelling sessions. A full picnic-style menu will be available for purchase throughout the celebration, too, and attendees will have a chance to bake cookies in a wood stove and taste some real homemade kettle corn.
