Growing up, I fully embraced the punk-rock do-it-yourself ethos in everything I did — from starting my own band and self-recording our albums to sewing my own clothes and silk-screening tees and patches. Fast-forward ten years, and I began to see the appeal of Buddhism to a highly independent type like myself. Buddha is not a god, but a teacher, and rather than trying to preach hard-and-fast rules, his teachings seek to guide followers on a DIY path to learning and self-exploration.

Author and ordained Zen Buddhist Master Brad Warner has bridged these same two philosophies in his new book Sit Down and Shut Up: Punk Rock Commentaries on Buddha, God, Truth, Sex, Death, and Dogen’s Treasury of the Right Dharma Eye. Warner will speak on these topics and sign Sit Down tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Boulder Book Store, 1107 Pearl Street in Boulder.
