Given that it’s a “rally for people who’ve been too busy to go to rallies,” as Daily Show host and figurehead Jon Stewart put it, it’s understandable that a lot of the target audience would also be too busy to make it out to Washington, D.C., for the real thing. Hence The Rally to Restore Sanity: Denver, a local version of Stewart’s somewhat serious, somewhat satirical answer to Glenn Beck’s Rally to Restore Honor.
“This exploded way more than I expected it to,” says Keira Havens, who describes herself as “the silly person who put up the Facebook page, so I guess I’m the organizer.” After following the idea from its beginnings on Reddit.com to Stewart’s announcement that he’d pick up the cause, Havens decided to hold a Denver satellite rally — one of several local versions around the country. Since then, she’s rounded up a couple thousand confirmed attendees, a live feed of Stewart’s rally and an appearance from the Flobots’ Jonny 5 — pretty fair shakes for a spur-of-the-moment whim. In fact, Havens now says it’s shaping up to be one of the top five satellite rallies in the nation.
The rally runs today from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Civic Center Park. It’s free, and you can stay as long as you like, but Havens asks that you leave your rabid opinions at home: “We are really trying to keep this as apolitical as possible,” she urges. “We’re just getting together to say, hey, people are yelling a lot, and we would prefer that you tone it down a little.”
