From now until the new year, tired music, forced cheer and gaudy decorations are the order of the day, and Scrooge you if you don’t like it. If you do like it — or maybe are just suffering from the holiday version of Stockholm syndrome — you might as well immerse yourself neck-deep in the kitsch with a horrible holiday sweater and a screening of the godawful Christmas catastrophe that is Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.
“It’s so bad, it makes fun of itself,” says Ernie Quiroz, programming manager for the Denver Film Society. “The set was so bad, the costumes — it’s just a hoot. And everyone loves ugly Christmas sweaters, so we’ll throw that in and make a night of it.”
The ugliest sweaters will win prizes, and whether your sweater wins or loses, everyone who survives the torturous film will have the song “Hooray for Santa Claus” forevermore seared into their brains as a bonus. All that plus an incoherent, dull and bizarre tale of Santa Claus bringing cheer to the Martians? After this, the worst seasonal schmaltz will seem joyous in comparison, and that’s a Christmas miracle.
See it tonight at 9:30 p.m. at the Sie FilmCenter, 2510 East Colfax Avenue. Tickets are $10, or $7 for DFS members. For tickets and more information, visit denverfilm.org.
