Costumed hula-hoopers, dancers and singers join the Mile High Freedom Band today for two Halloween dance parties set to the tune of spooky orchestral mash-ups. The band, with more than fifty members, takes over the Sherman Street Event Center with live renditions of The Addams Family and Scooby-Doo theme songs, new takes on pieces from Disney’s Fantasia and ghostly holiday remixes like “Transylvania 6-5000.”
Hosting both a 3 p.m. matinee and 7:30 p.m. evening show, Spooktacular! Spooktacular! A Halloween Extravaganza puts a big emphasis on being an accessible, family-friendly affair. Doors open an hour before the official party begins for pre-show “Thriller”-inspired dance lessons and kid-friendly refreshments (plus a bar serving adults-only beverages for the second performance.)
During the rest of the year, the Freedom Band plays more traditional concerts, so the Halloween shows are a time for both musicians and audience members to dance, interact and celebrate. “We usually do formal, sit-down concerts, and this is more of a cabaret performance,” says Clark Vander Broek, a Freedom Band board member.
Tickets are $10 for children, $20 for adults, and they’re available at www.mhfb.org or www.brownpapertickets.com. The Sherman Event Center is at 1770 Sherman Street.
