Everyone has seen A Christmas Carol — probably more than once. But no one has seen that story as it’s told in An Improvised Christmas Carol. “When I was in Seattle last year, I saw fliers for An Improvised Christmas Carol, and being an actor-producer-improviser person, I went to see the show and was just blown away,” explains producer David Jensen. So much so that he saw it twice, then decided to bring the idea to Denver.

The premise is simple. “The actors take thirty suggestions up top for different variables,” Jensen explains. “So you could end up naming Scrooge’s occupation or Tiny Tim’s affliction, and although the basic story remains the same, we work the suggestions in and improvise the entire show.”

They also work hard to keep everything strictly above-the-belt, making this a good family-friendly alternative to yet another forced viewing of the Disney cartoon version.

Catch An Improvised Christmas Carol at Vintage Theatre, 1468 Dayton Street in Aurora, starting tonight and running Thursdays through Sundays through December 27. Tickets are $16; visit animprovisedchristmascarol.com to learn more.

Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sun., Dec. 7, 6 p.m. Starts: Dec. 4. Continues through Dec. 27, 2014
