Over the last decade, the popularity of listening to people talk about standup comedy has nearly eclipsed the joys of actually listening to standup. And while this generation’s crop of indie-comedy podcasters has popularized the art of self-reflective dissection, there’s certainly some worth in letting comedy elders tell their stories.
The careers of Robin Williams and David Steinberg span several decades and genres of the funny business. Williams is most known for his family-friendly movie and TV roles, but his standup can be relatively edgy and hilariously poignant, touching on issues of drugs, sex and politics. Steinberg, meanwhile, busied himself directing episodes of Friends and Designing Women — not to mention once getting the Smothers Brothers kicked off TV with his religious satire.
