Jaws dropped when it was announced that up-and-coming filmmaker Rian Johnson would direct episodes VIII and IX of the Star Wars series. Sure, Johnson has created beloved genre films like The Brothers Bloom, but doesn’t Star Wars warrant a bigger name? Keith Garcia, creative manager for the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Littleton, argues that the filmmaker is an excellent fit: He’s a franchise fanboy, he has an original voice, and he knows how to work in a variety of genres without losing his creative edge.

Get a feel for that edge over the next three days, when the Alamo will present several Johnson-related events. The first begins tonight at 5 p.m., with screenings of Brick and The Brothers Bloom; tickets for the double feature are $15.

Then catch Johnson himself tomorrow, September 22, presenting his favorite classic film, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, at 7 p.m.; tickets are $10.75. And finally, Johnson will provide live narration over his film Looper beginning at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 23; tickets are $15.

“I’m excited for a lot of people to meet him for the first time, before he takes off into the stratosphere as the director of Star Wars VIII and IX,” Garcia says about the rare in-person appearance. “Let’s sit down with him before his work gets crazy and become his biggest fans all over again.”

The Alamo is at 7301 South Santa Fe Drive in Littleton. For more information, go to drafthouse.com/denver/littleton or call 720-588-4107.
