It’s a tale as old as time travel. Three aliens from Zots, a planet on which romance destroys the atmosphere, travel to Earth to break their hearts and save their home. If they’re not in love, they’re not in danger of environmental collapse, right? As part of the Denver FilmCenter’s six-year-long Cinema Q series, Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same explores a strange, spacey story of love, loss and intergalactic travel.
“We don’t often get to play lesbian films,” says Denver FilmCenter program manager Keith Garcia. “There’s kind of a shortage in the world, and I like to think it’s because they want to make the good ones. With this movie, they did, making its extremely low-budget feel into a charming film.”
The plan soon backfires: While Zylar and Barr fall in love, Zoinx is less fortunate, instead drifting into a planet-crossed love affair with a plain, mild-mannered Earthling named Jane (Lisa Haas, a Lakewood native). Not realizing that Zoinx is an alien, Jane returns the feeling. Romance brews. Government agents appear. Things get weird. “And then they get good,” Garcia says. “Who doesn’t like modern romance crossed with `50s sci-fi?”
The film opens March 30 at the FilmCenter, 2510 East Colfax Avenue; tickets are $9.75. For more information, call 303-595-3456 or visit www.denverfilm.org.
