When the Starz Denver Film Festival starts to roll tonight for its 37th year, diversity will be the first thing you notice: The 2014 edition not only features a variety of red-carpet celebrity events (Victor Levin’s 5 to 7 and Frank Whaley’s Like Sunday, Like Rain are among the 2014 fest’s big screenings) and more than 250 films and videos of every length, but it also makes side trips into Brazilian film, works from female filmmakers, LGBT-themed films, environmental documentaries, Colorado-made work, Stanley Nights horror flicks and even music videos.
As for the parties, 5 to 7, the dissection of a modern affair, sets the tone for the opening-night red-carpet offering at 8 p.m. this evening at the Buell Theatre in the Denver Performing Arts Complex; the Big Night celebrity screening on November 15, also at the Buell, features Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley in the Alan Turing biopic The Imitation Game from director Morten Tyldum.
