There’s nothing that makes you feel more patriotic than listening to a symphony play that line about “the rockets’ red glare” while the rockets are, well, glaring. Beyond the stirring standards, tonight’s free performance of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra at Civic Center Park will feature a light show and, yes, fireworks.
To be honest, the rockets won’t yet be glaring when the CSO opens its Independence Eve Concert at 8 p.m. with “The Star Spangled Banner” (fireworks come after the performance), but a program that includes “America the Beautiful” and “Stars and Stripes Forever” should light your nationalistic fuse. The roster isn’t all hymns to the fatherland, though. In addition to chestnuts like Gershwin’s “An American in Paris” (the musical equivalent of baseball), the CSO will lighten the mood with Anderson’s “The Typewriter,” a silly, hyperactive classic that uses typewriter sound effects as a rhythm section.
