An inventor of jelly-bean erasers and glow-in-the-dark books leaves home, only to discover that his family is his true inspiration. A pirate-chasing woman and a king get married and realize that their baby is the best adventure yet. A possum goes to the store to buy some baking soda and meets head-on with a giant snapping turtle. This year’s Colorado Book Awards finalists prove to be as eclectic as the characters that appear in them. Okay, so those are only the children’s books. Still, the printed word, no matter how silly, is reason to celebrate. Tonight, party with the Colorado Humanities and the Center for the Book as the organization announces the sixteenth annual Colorado Book Award winners. The swanky event (we’re talking cocktail attire) will recognize more than fifty writers, editors, illustrators and photographers in ten book categories. Highlights include a reception dinner and a silent auction featuring author-inspired gift baskets. And, of course, honorees will read from their winning works. The evening begins at 6 p.m. in the Seawell Grand Ballroom at the Denver Performing Arts Complex.
