For Sweet Tooth, which opens tonight, Buntport Theater is again collaborating with musician Adam Stone — and that’s a very good sign. Two of this company’s weirdest and funniest works were created in collaboration with Stone. In the first, Seal. Stamp. Send. Bang., company members spoofed musicals and sang their hearts out. The fact that — as they freely admitted — none of them really knew how to sing led to some amazing moments: a woman belting out an ode to a bomb from inside a box, another loudly and rapturously celebrating the bird splat on her windshield, which she saw as a sign and characterized as a “bird poop angel.” In Jugged Rabbit Stew, a huge, evil magician’s rabbit kidnapped the woman he thought he loved and terrorized everyone else around him — all accompanied by Stone’s synth-pop sound.
Sweet Tooth occupies the same dark-comedy realm as these earlier shows. The main character is a woman who has retreated to her music-box-like home and become a recluse. She controls every aspect of her life, including her servant and lover, until she gets a toothache and an eventual visit from a dentist. A caring, empathetic dentist. We can’t wait to see what magical and musical shenanigans ensue.
Sweet Tooth plays through November 17 at Buntport, 717 Lipan Street. For times and ticket prices, call 720-946-1388 or go to www.buntport.com.
