If you’re bar-hopping in Golden today, be on the lookout for a bunch of flakes drowning pitchers of cold suds. It’s all part of the Snowball Pub Crawl, an ’80s-themed, ski gear costume romp (Madonna in North Face?) to benefit Autism Speaks, a local nonprofit that provides funding for research, family services and advocacy.
The event, organized by Mikayla Houser, whose twelve-year-old son has autism, was hatched while Houser and a few friends were hanging out at a local watering hole. “I wanted to figure out a way to raise money for Autism Speaks, and a bunch of us were brainstorming ideas at a bar. Someone suggested an ’80s-costume, ski-themed party, and we all thought, ‘Yeah, that would be fun,’ so we ran with it,” says Houser.
Here’s how it works: “Flakes” (people) form “snowballs” (teams), and for $35 per person, stumble through five Golden ice holes — Table Mountain Grill, Ace-Hi Tavern, Golden City Brewery and Blue Canyon Bar & Grill — where they’ll down pitchers of beer before heading to a wrap-up party at the Buffalo Rose for a costume contest and live music from the Raygunomics, an ’80s cover band.
