Giving recently restored silent films a live soundtrack — along with a new life on the big screen and fresh audience appreciation for pre-talkie history –- has been the Chautauqua Auditorium’s business for close to thirty years. Tonight, the 2013 Silent Film Series continues with Faust, a 1926 German-made film about the battle of good and evil, with one man, Faust, at the center of it all.
Accompanied by resident improvisational pianist and film historian Hank Troy, this special Kino edition of Faust is the Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Foundation’s restoration of the original version of the film, complete with hand-painted intertitles that insert written text. “Faust is a blockbuster film with spectacular special effects that has not been screened at Chautauqua since 1997,” says the venue’s Ann Obenchain.
The film series runs every Wednesday through August 7 at Chautauqua, 900 Baseline Road in Boulder. Films screen at 7:30 p.m.; tickets are $5 to $10. For tickets, information and a full lineup of films, visit chautauqua.com or call the box office at 303-440-7666.
