Madelife’s annual holiday party is strictly BYOS: Bring your own sock. Tonight, the Boulder DIY venue is hosting its third Festivus Puppet Party, where guests can partake in puppet performances and dance-offs — after creating their own Festivus puppets, of course. If you provide the sock, madelife will take care of the rest: felt, pipe cleaners, googly eyes, yarn, glitter and anything else needed to bring your sock to life.

Curator and director Leah Brenner says the group chose sock-puppet crafting as the focus of the bash because it’s a non-intimidating craft that’s accessible to everybody. “Anybody can make a sock puppet; it’s just a matter of putting eyeballs on a sock, and there you have it,” Brenner says. “Anybody at any skill level can do it, and that’s what’s awesome about it. It’s a fun way to get crafty.”

And sincere: After you’ve had your fill of puppet dancing, you can try some puppet therapy. “We found people were talking through their puppets,” Brenner notes. “It’s a liberating experience. When you have a puppet on your hand, the barriers come down. You can be more open and get a little weird.”

Party with your puppet from 7 to 11 p.m. tonight at madelife, 2000 21st Street in Boulder; RSVP at madelife.com.
Fri., Dec. 19, 7-11 p.m., 2014

Will you step up to support Westword this year?

At Westword, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $23,000 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $50,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of Westword, now’s the time to give back.
