The Addams Family debuted in the pages of The New Yorker in 1938 as cartoonist Charles Addams’s creepy creation: a wealthy family who loved all things macabre — from dressing in black to reveling in misery. More than seventy years later, the family is deeply embedded in cultural history, with the beloved characters appearing everywhere from a Hanna-Barbera animated series to live-action films to the inside of a pinball game.
Now the members of this altogether ooky family are about to open their mouths to sing. The national tour of the Broadway musical version of The Addams Family will make its Denver premiere tonight, following the dark-arts-worshipping clan members as they navigate their way through — horror of all horrors — daughter Wednesday’s love for a normal person. The song and dance numbers highlight how the Addamses are forced, as a result, to interact with a family that doesn’t share their love for all things dead.
The Addams Family runs through July 1, with Tuesday through Sunday shows at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m., at the Buell Theatre in the Denver Performing Arts Complex. For tickets, $25 and up, call 303-893-4100 or visit www.denvercenter.org/addamsfamily.
