Today is the birthday of one of the West’s most recognizable icons: William “Buffalo Bill” Cody. To celebrate, the Buffalo Bill Museum & Grave, 987½ Lookout Mountain Road in Golden, is throwing the legendary showman a free Buffalo Bill Birthday Celebration from noon to 3 p.m., complete with cake and several Buffalo Bill look-alikes to help cut it, and such party games as the annual Buffalo Chip Tossing Contest. (For details, go to www.buffalobill.org or call 303-526-0744.)
Annie Oakley re-enactor Barbara Melfi marvels over the variety of people who attend the party every year, from foreign tourists and celebrities to lots of little kids. Her husband, R. F. Melfi, is one of the Buffalo Bill look-alikes, and one year, a boy asked him, “What are you doing here, Buffalo Bill?”
“Celebrating my birthday,” he answered.
“Really?” the boy responded. “How old are you?”
Will you step up to support Westword this year?
At Westword, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $22,750 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $50,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of Westword, now’s the time to give back.
R.F. smiled and said, “One hundred and fifty years old.”
Looking slightly confused, the boy asked, “Is that in cowboy years?”
