Denver’s a great place for fans of the big five of genre film (that’s sci-fi, fantasy, horror, exploitation and cult), as every week we get a generous helping of selections to choose from. As usual, we’re rounding up your options for the weekend to come and the following week, and making a recommendation of one can’t-miss film. This week, we’ve got Bruce Campbell kicking the crap out of a bunch of Deadites and misremembering the spell to destroy the Necronomicon. Groovy.
Pick of the Week: Army of Darkness
Where: Esquire Theatre, 600 Downing Street
When: Midnight Friday, September 3, Saturday, September 4
Why?: Listen up, you primitive screwheads, this is one of the greatest horror-action-comedies of all time. Sure, it may have strayed too far into the action and comedy camps for hardcore fans of its predecessor films Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2, but don’t let that stop you from appreciating its clever writing, quotable lines (that’s where that “primitive screwheads” thing comes from, don’t take it personally) and great action sequences. Star Bruce Campbell is at his finest here and director Sam Raimi shows off the chops he’d later put to excellent use in the first two Spider-Man movies. Except this film is better than both of those put together, and has a much higher number of demons.

When: Opens Friday, September 3, runs one week only
Why?: Cult favorite director Neil Marshall (The Descent, Doomsday) tries his hand at a sword-and-sandals epic about a war between the Romans and Pict tribesmen in Britain. Word is, it’s absolutely brutal and, as a bonus, absolutely no Russell Crowe in it!

The Last Dragon
Where: Starz FilmCenter, Tivoli building on the Auraria Campus
When: 10 p.m. Friday, September 3, and Saturday, September 4
Why?: Because it is a martial arts/disco/blaxploitation movie produced by Motown legend Berry Gordy. Really, what else do I need to say? You either read that and say “I must see this film!” or you read it and realize you aren’t the kind of person that wants to see Berry Gordy’s filmic take on martial arts, disco and blaxploitation. If you’re the latter, I weep for you.

Where: Thin Man parking lot, 2015 East 17th Avenue
When: Wednesday, September 8 at dusk (9 p.m.-ish)
Why?: It’s a surreal, absurd and dark stop motion animation film about the residents of an apartment building trying to figure out their lives. It opens with a suicide, ends with two naked men leaping from the water like dolphins and travels through some even stranger terrain getting from point a to b. Plus, it’s free! Bring a chair or blanket to sit on, though.
