SlamNUBA has switched its monthly slam to second Fridays; the October edition features poet Adrienne Nadeau, a Chicagoan with a powerful voice. Nadeau will also offer a workshop on Saturday, October 11, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Savoy, as part of the group’s Poetry and Pancakes series. If you slam — or if you simply like to watch it — it’s a good weekend for you in Denver.

Barry Schwabsky, Noel Black and Alexis Almeida

The local small press and performance space Counterpath will present Barry Schwabsky, art critic for The Nation as well as a writer and poet, as headliner of a three-person reading that includes Colorado Springs poet, journalist and blogger Noel Black and University of Colorado professor and poet Alexis Almeida. As always, readings at Counterpath are free; rsvp online for a seat in the small room.
Garth Stein, A Sudden Light

The author of The Art of Racing in the Rain, the runaway bestseller about a race car-loving dog, is back with a new novel, A Sudden Light, a story propelled by the dark secrets discovered by a boy in a family mansion. He’ll introduce at a lecture and book-signing Friday, hosted by the University of Denver’s Enrichment Program and the Tattered Cover. Stein also appears next Monday, October 13, at the First Congregational Church in Boulder as a guest of the Boulder Book Store; the $10 fee includes a $5 voucher towards purchase of the book.
