Help March go out like a lion by having a roaring good time at some of this town’s great free events. This week you can be a pop diva, meet a comedian or enjoy some back-to-the-future fun. Check out the Westword calendar for more events, and let us know in the comments section if we missed a bargain.
Ophelia’s Electric Soapbox
7:30 p.m. Tuesday, free
Some of us may not have the voice, but we do have the moves. If you don’t have the pipes but can do a mean karaoke performance, here’s a night for you. Make all the moves while lip syncing the words – just like they do on TV! Props will be provided, or you can bring your own if you really want to own the night: You might just walk away with some prizes.
Talkin’ Shop with Matt Monroe
Mutiny Information Cafe
7 p.m. Thursday, free
Learn how the comedy world works from one of the city’s busiest comics. Matt Monroe has orchestrated some of the town’s best comedy shows, including Propaganda and the Underground Comedy Show, while also doing gigs across the country. Still, he’s found time this week to be on Talkin’ Shop, the awesome live podcast hosted by Anthony Crawford.
Will you step up to support Westword this year?
At Westword, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $21,500 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $50,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of Westword, now’s the time to give back.
Indie Underground
Skylark Lounge
9 p.m. Thursday, free
After Talkin’ Shop, head a couple blocks south and get weird at the Skylark, which will be piping in a live broadcast of Radio 1190’s Hypnotic Turtle, a fun broadcast of antics and shout-outs to local hangouts. Following that will be live sounds from A Light Among Many, Lo Mismo and Iconslave – dark-wave synth sounds that match pretty well with a cold beer.
