“As I came out of the womb, my father handed me a pencil, and I’ve been writing ever since,” says local author Steve Katz, whose new book, Time’s Wallet celebrates its release today. The book is the first part of a memoir that will end up spanning two or three books, but his approach to the format might be different from what people have come to expect. “What bores me about most memoirs is how the writer strains to create a narrative arc, so I decided not to do that,” says Katz. Instead, the 54 individual stories from this volume are arranged alphabetically by title. For Katz, the reasoning is simple: “Memory doesn’t work like a story; having a memoir that functions like one doesn’t make any sense.” It might seem off-balance at first, but each “memoirrhoid” as Katz calls them, resolves itself using its own form, and the collection coalesces to create a picture of his life, from 1935 to the present.
