Why stick to the straight and narrow? CORE New Art Space is starting the year off with a certifiably offbeat duo: iconoclastic quilter/artist J.B. Wilcox, who prefers to call himself a fiber artist (although, as he puts it, he’s “technically an art quilter who’s sick of the ‘Q’ word”), and wacky metal sculptor Greg Wasil, best known for the eighteen-foot fire-breathing Beast sculpture he sometimes rides along Santa Fe Drive. They’ll be sharing the gallery for …in a Padded Room (Wilcox) and Mental Man (Wasil), a pair of shows with a kind of intertwined theme. Both shows open today and continue through January 21.
When asked how he chose his cryptic show title, Wilcox answers matter-of-factly: “Because I’m insane. Because how long does it take me to make one of my quilts? The only answer is that it takes too long.” And Wasil’s Mental Man? “It’s because I’m mental or my objects are mental,” Wasil says with an implied wink. Fittingly, the steel sculpture the name describes holds its own spinning head up in the air while its body floats in space.
