The Vail Valley Foundation’s 2012 Korbel American Ski Classic gets underway today at 4:30 p.m. with the Volvo Legends of Skiing Giant Slalom competition on Vail’s Golden Peak, followed by a free concert at 6:30 p.m. featuring G. Love and Special Sauce, marking the 30th anniversary of “America’s original celebrity ski event.” Head up early for the open house today from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Colorado Ski & Snowboard Museuem, where the curators are celebrating Legends of Skiing Month (and, as we’ve reported previously, now have a pretty epic snowboard history exhibit, too).
Confirmed celebrity competitors on the list this year include Law & Order star Anthony Anderson, Patrick “Puddy” Warburton, Alfonso Ribeiro (Carlton Banks on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air), and Olympic gold medalist gymnast Mitch Gaylord, among others.
For celebrity-spotting, your best bets are Friday and Saturday for the Korbel Ford Cup Race, a celebrity team competition starting at 9:30 a.m. each day, or the Hold ‘Em for Hope poker tournament at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. There’s also a Battle of the Legends Relay on Saturday at 3:45 p.m. All of the American Ski Classic race events are free for spectators.

Will you step up to support Westword this year?
At Westword, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $20,000 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $50,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of Westword, now’s the time to give back.
