The Vail Valley Foundation’s 2012 Teva Mountain Games get to paddlin’ today in Vail with both the Mountain Click photo competition and the Steep Creek Championships kayak race running concurrently along a 1/4-mile stretch of Homestake Creek with sections affectionately known to kayakers as “Leap of Faith” and “Piece of Shit.”
The rest of Mountain Games get underway tomorrow morning, with the Outside Adventure Film School starting at 8 a.m., the first qualifiers for the Bouldering World Cup starting at 9 a.m., the first wave of the DockDogs Big Air competition starting at 10 a.m., and a busy afternoon schedule that includes the Gibbon Games slackline competition, the Teva Slopestyle and Kayak Freestyle events, and a screening of adventure films starting at 7 p.m. There are free clinics and gear demos throughout the weekend.
Saturday’s events include the 2012 Maui Jim 2 Fly X-Stream fly-casting competition, the Down River Sprint race on Gore Creek, the Vail Pass Half Marathon (which doubles as the start of the Ultimate Mountain Challenge endurance race), X-Country Mountain Bike races, the Mud Run, and finals for the Kayak Freestyle and Bouldering World Cup events.

On Sunday there’s a 10K Spring Runoff at 8 a.m., a Youth Bouldering competition, the DockDogs Speed Retrieve event, road bike time trials, and the 8 Ball Kayak Sprint finals, among other events.
