Churches: Love ’em or leave ’em, they’ve got all the damn organs in this town, so if you want to see and hear a towering set of time-honored pipes reverberate with melody, you’ve gotta get inside. But if church just ain’t your thing, don’t worry: Shawn Snow, tour director for the Colorado Historical Society, admits it’s not his, either, which is why he’s thrilled to lead today’s Organ Crawl of Historic Denver Organs. “I’m not a church-goer, so I haven’t really heard these organs,” he says. “I’m thinking that a lot of people are like that: They’re curious, but they don’t want to have to attend church to hear it.”
Amen, brother.
The tour, which begins with the 122-year-old organ inside Trinity United Methodist, crawls to Saint Paul Lutheran Church and ends at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center (which, okay, isn’t a church). At each stop, visitors will spend thirty minutes learning about the featured organ’s history and hearing it in action. “It’s an old instrument, almost a dying art form,” Snow adds. “But it has a lot of enthusiasts.”
