Now a 23-year-old tradition, AIDS Walk Colorado still finds ways to renew itself: Along with the usual pledge walk, 5K run and volleyball tournament, all of which will raise money for the Colorado AIDS Project and other state HIV/AIDS organizations, this year’s participants will get to have a few laughs during the new .5K Diva Dash Stiletto Run, a short 1,641 feet of agonizing pain and drag-queen humor to stir up the post-walk Celebration of Life festivities in Cheesman Park.
Bring your walking shoes and your spare pair of six-inch pumps to the park for the walk, which begins at 9 a.m.; the Diva Dash follows at 11:30 a.m., and the festival, featuring a kids’ area, vendor booths, food, beer and live music, continues until 2 p.m. Several panels of the AIDS Memorial Quilt will be on view during the party; this year’s selection includes two high-profile celebrity panels, those commemorating Freddy Mercury and Real World star Pedro Zamora. “It’s a great way to remember those we’ve lost to the disease and to celebrate those who are still with us,” says spokesman Tim Schuetz.
Registration for the 5K run is $35; walkers join in for free, but donations or pledges are always welcome. And take note: Due to ongoing construction, this year’s festivities will be moved to the north end of the park. For more information or to register, go to www.aidswalkcolorado.org.
